"Credit Scores & the Dilemma of Discrimination in Hiring Decisions"

Presented by:

Michael Poulos, President and CEO, Michigan First Credit Union
and
Scott Patterson, Shareholder, Butzel Long

Credit scores affect more than personal financial topics such as mortgage rates, the ability to purchase a car and credit card APR’s. Many fail to realize that a credit score, good or bad, can also determine life-altering employment decisions. Given the state of the present economy, some struggle both in finding employment and staying afloat financially, and a credit score could be central to the resolution of both challenges.

Mr. Poulos will discuss the components that make up a credit score and how understanding them can lead to a more positive financial outlook. Additionally, Mr. Patterson will examine the legal requirements imposed on employers who use credit reports and the potential risks employers face when basing hiring decisions on a candidate’s credit score. Lastly, we will present information which examines how using credit scores in hiring decisions can affect the diversity of our talent pools.
